Social cohesion is the ability of a society to live together in harmony, with respect for diversity, justice and mutual support. It is not just a social idea — it is active action that brings people together, overcomes differences and creates a safe, supportive environment for everyone.<
For us, young volunteers, social cohesion is a way to create real change at both the local and global levels.<
People who work on cohesion see diversity not as a barrier but as a resource. Whether it is conflict resolution, creating inclusive educational programmes or supporting socially vulnerable groups, every action is aimed at strengthening trust and solidarity.<
In countries with a large cultural mix, such as Ukraine or Turkey, young people play an important role in shaping dialogue between communities. With the support of volunteer organisations, youth centres and international projects, more and more young people are learning to build bridges rather than walls.<
Social cohesion also develops important life skills: empathy, communication, critical thinking and leadership. These skills are important not only for volunteering, but also for active civic participation and a democratic society.<
As volunteers, we already practise cohesion: we collaborate with different people, seek common solutions, build trust and support those in need. The next step is to deepen our understanding of social processes and act even more consciously.<
So, social cohesion is the key to a strong, sustainable society. No matter where you come from or what language you speak, you can become someone who unites, inspires and creates a space where everyone feels at home.<
It all starts with respect, listening and the desire to be together.<
