Hello from Ankara! We’re Kika and Mariia, two volunteers spending two months in Ankara,Türkiye, working on a project that aims to ensure the sustainable socio-economic integration of Ukrainian refugees and promote intercultural dialogue. Our aim in joining this project was fundamentally to be able to contribute in a time of need. We knew that we wanted to contribute meaningfully, to step out of our comfort zones, and to embrace a new culture. But what we've experienced so far has gone beyond just volunteering—it’s been a great experience so far, that dives in the real meaning of social responsibility, human connection, and intercultural understanding. Our project focuses on supporting Ukrainian refugees who have sought safety in Türkiye due to the ongoing war. We’ll work alongside Life Path Association, offering language support and other multiple educational and fun workshops for children and women.

In today's interconnected world, the concepts of social responsibility and volunteering are increasingly essential for a well-functioning society. Social responsibility refers to the ethical obligation individuals and organizations have to act in ways that benefit society at large. Volunteering, on the other hand, is the act of offering one's time and services freely to support causes, communities, or individuals in need. Both are deeply intertwined, as volunteering is one of the most tangible expressions of social responsibility.

Social responsibility stems from the belief that each individual has a duty not only to themselves but also to others. This concept has long existed in philosophical and cultural traditions, often under the themes of justice, community, and mutual aid. In modern terms, it means understanding how one's actions affect others and taking conscious steps to contribute positively to society.

For individuals, social responsibility may involve making ethical choices, such as supporting fair-trade products, reducing environmental footprints, or participating in civic duties like voting or protesting. For organizations, it includes corporate social responsibility, where companies integrate social and environmental concerns into their business practices. Whether at a personal or corporate level, social responsibility encourages a culture of giving back and being accountable for more than just personal gain.

Volunteering serves as one of the most direct and impactful ways individuals can fulfill their social responsibilities. It’s a selfless act driven by compassion, empathy, and a desire to make a difference. In our own experience, we have been actively volunteering in Ankara to assist Ukrainian refugees who have been displaced by the war. Our efforts are focused on helping them rebuild their lives with dignity and support. It’s an experience that has opened our eyes to the real, human face of global crises—and the incredible strength of those affected.

This work has not only deepened our understanding of global responsibility, but also strengthened our belief in the power of community support. Volunteering with refugees is not always easy, but it is deeply rewarding. It reinforces the idea that social responsibility is not just a concept; it is something lived and practiced in everyday actions that uplift others.
